What moorings reads, and where it goes.
Effective date: October 24, 2026.
moorings is a macOS menu bar app that moves windows. It runs entirely on your Mac. It has no server, no account with its developer, no analytics and no tracking. Nothing it reads is sent to its developer or to anyone else.
What moorings reads
Windows, through Accessibility. With your permission, moorings reads each window's position, size and title, and which app owns it, so it can move and resize windows and recall a saved layout. It does not read what is inside a window.
Your displays. moorings reads the size and arrangement of your displays to work out where windows go.
Mouse clicks and drags. moorings watches mouse clicks and drags to snap a dragged window and to handle the green button and extra mouse buttons. It acts on them and keeps no record.
Your shortcuts, not your typing. Keyboard shortcuts are registered with macOS, so moorings only hears the shortcuts you set. It never sees anything else you type.
What stays on your Mac
- Settings. Your shortcuts, sizes, anchored apps, theme and other choices are stored in the app's preferences on your Mac.
- Workspaces. A workspace you save holds each window's app, title and position, stored with your settings.
- Exports. When you export your settings, moorings writes them to the file you choose and nowhere else.
- Logs. moorings writes app IDs, window positions and its own messages to the macOS system log on your Mac. Window titles are not logged.
What goes over the network
The update check. Once a day, unless you turn it off in Settings, moorings asks GitHub for the latest release of moorings. The request carries nothing about you or your windows. GitHub sees it as it sees any web request, under the GitHub Privacy Statement.
Links you click. The release notes, the tip link and the Accessibility settings open in your browser or System Settings only when you choose them, or once after an update to show what changed.
That is all. moorings does not sell, share or transfer anything, does not use anything for advertising, and does not use anything to train any model.
Removing it
Turn off moorings in System Settings, Privacy and Security, Accessibility to stop it reading windows. Deleting the app and its preferences removes everything it kept.
